The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark ö the longest Shakespeare play by number of lines (3929) Hamlet: The Story
Hamlet, the son of the late Hamlet, King of Denmark, who died two months before the start of the play, is the melancholy Dane. Hamlet directs impassioned speeches to the audience as he contemplates life, death, and the duality of good and evil within each person. The play is filled with court intrigue, romance, insanity, suicide, murder, ghosts, and concludes with a deadly fencing duel between Hamlet (Jeffrey Lippold) and Laertes (Terence J. Burke). Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, hears from his friend Horatio (George Blum) & Bernardo (Steve Babick), the soldier of the watch, that his fatherās ghost walks the night. Hamlet is informed by his fatherās ghost (Richard Herring) that Claudius (Tom Haine), Hamletās uncle, murdered him. He demands that Hamlet avenge his death and also Claudiusā hasty marriage to Gertrude (Jo Anne Scott), Hamletās mother and the late kingās widow. Hamlet first tests the truth of the Ghostās accusations with the help of a troupe of actors led by the Player King (Alan Clark) with the Player Queen (Julie Perkins) and his friend Horatio (George Blum), and then waits for the right moment to avenge his fatherās murder. Hamlet pretends to be mad, causing the elder statesman Polonius (Alex Sandie) to eavesdrop on Hamlet as he meets with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Richard OāCasey & Carlie Garrison), school aquaintances whom Claudius has sent to spy on Hamlet and on a meeting with Ophelia (Carolyn Wheat Koenig), Hamletās intended bride whom he now rejects. Hamlet comes to grips with life and death in a powerful graveside scene with the Gravedigger (William W. Savage). This greatest of Shakespeareās tragedies is presented in a two-hour, edited version with modern substitutes for archaic words. Director Keith A. Anderson adapted the script. Karla Kash serves as fencing choreographer, Technical Director Dale Goodman provides the set with Suzanne Sebenaler dressing the set & Scott Koenig creating the light and sound effects. Dale Hudson (stage manager) and Fran Palmer (production stage manager) help run the show. |
